The RACGP Standards for General Practices

The RACGP Standards for General Practices have been ratified by the profession as the standards to be used for the accreditation of Australian general practices.
Following an extensive trial process, and the use of these Standards in AGPAL accreditation since 1998, the Standards have been found to:

  • identify good practice;
  • be reliably assessed by trained surveyors;
  • be acceptable;
  • be achievable.
The Standards currently in use are the second edition ratified by the RACGP in 2000.  Feedback via AGPAL re-accreditation visits from general practice staff and AGPAL surveyors continues to provide valuable and significant information about the Standards and their application and is important to assist ongoing Standards development by the RACGP.
There are fifteen standards grouped in five main areas.  They describe the qualities of practice activities and facilities required for accreditation.
Every Standard must be met for a practice to remain Accredited.
Each standard contains criteria, which describe key components of the Standard.  The criteria are used to assess whether the Standards are met. Each criterion has a number of indicators, which assist a practice and surveyors to assess the degree of achievement of each criterion and these are classified as key () or non-key indicators.  It is not necessary for every indicator to be met.  However, criteria are met when all the key indicators have been met.
All criteria must be met for a practice to remain Accredited.
A criterion is determined to be met when at least it’s entire key () indicators are met.
